Well, where were you at 1:50 today? I was in my classroom with two of my teammates, discussing our class lists. We heard a rumble, looked up at my ceiling, and thought someone was rolling something across the roof (one story school). Then the ground started moving. A LOT. And we were like, uh, what? And it just got louder (odd) and stronger…and finally Cheryl said, “Uh, guys, I think its an earthquake.” And we ran out in the hall, to where everyone else was running out, and all proceeded to wonder what the heck happened. It finally stopped (you know, seemed like 10 minutes, was in reality probably not even 40 seconds) and they told us to evacuate the building.
Luckily I had my cell phone in my pocket. This would NEVER have happened on a day that kids were there, so that was a really good thing. I called Peter RIGHT as it happened, and when he picked up I said, “We just had an earthquake.” He said, “We did too.” Only looking back is this funny, because we work about 20 miles apart, not sure why I thought he wouldn’t know there was an earthquake! I asked him to call Logan’s daycare because I knew he was by a landline at his desk and to call me back.
Little did I know they were being evacuated too. When I hadn’t heard back in oh, a minute, I started trying to call daycare myself and of course, no cell service at all. Nothing. I was mildly freaking out, but saw no damage right at school so was trying to convince myself all was okay. When we finally got back into the building it took me another 5 minutes to get the phone to go through, even on a landline, and of course I got the news that they were all fine – the kids even slept through it! They followed their procedures and got them up and outside, and they were happily playing outside when I got there to pick him up. It is quite comforting to know that daycare is within walking distance of school, if I had to get there, 2 miles maybe? But he was in great hands.
Clearly he wasn’t phased…

So, yes, it was a bit of an adventure. I honestly had NO Idea what was going on. My dad thought it was a terrorist attack (this is always your first assumption around here), my mom thought a plane had hit their building, Peter thought something was going on with the construction nearby. Oddly, I was SO glad it wasn’t last week. I would have been much more freaked out by myself. Obviously I would have loved to have Logan with me, but at the same time I’m glad we weren’t alone.
There’s another experience for the life’s book I guess! My dad says it’s one he can do without for the rest of his life, thank you very much. There have been a few aftershocks, Peter felt one but I haven’t really.
Can I tell you how thankful I am we did not have students today? We would have done fine, but it’s hard when you’re the teacher because in a situation like that your students are the priority and you really don’t have a way of checking on your own family for a while. I’m hoping we don’t have anything like this for a LONG time!
Looking for a calm night tonight. Although, as one of my co-workers said, “Oh no, now Shannon’s never gonna sleep!”
